Japanese Shakespeare: Tikamatsu Monzaemon

Chikamatsu Monzaemon is a famous Japanese playwright of the Edo period. He was born, presumably, in 1653 in Kyoto in a samurai family. Many details of his biography are still unknown for sure, which makes him a rather mysterious figure. But it can be said with certainty that his work is the peak of the Japanese "renaissance" in drama, just as Shakespeare is the peak of the Western renaissance.
It is still unclear what he did before joining the theater, but already in 1677, at the age of 24, Tikamatsu was a huge success with the public in Kyoto. He was working at that time composing kabuki plays for the Tojuro Kyakuhon Theater. The plots from these plays were borrowed from the intrigues of the Daimyo's families. And usually in them, evil was almost always punished and good won.
In 1705, Chikamatsu Monzaemon retired from Kabuki Theater and joined Dzerui. It is a puppet theater with musical accompaniment by shamisen. For Mondzaemon, this revealed even more powers and opportunities to create on stage without actors. And he liked it. He wrote plays for the famous musician Taketomo Tadayu, who ran the theater until his death. Their joint work transformed the Japanese theatrical tradition so much that the Japanese called all the dzerui until 1685 "old dzerui", and after that "new dzerui".
The first and obvious difference between Tikamatsu's "new jerui" and the "old jerui" was the number of acts. For the latter, six parts were traditionally written, and for the former from 3 to 5. It depends on how serious the work is: everyday cases fit into the minimum, and historical ones into the maximum. The second is a change in narrative. Before Tikamatsu, all the stories were told as prose, but he had already created such a system: the characters' lines were prose, and the author's narration was metrical poetry.
All these reforms were necessary, according to Tikamatsu. After all, he wanted to show the truth to the audience that came to him. And these are merchants, artisans, samurai, Ronin. Mondzaemon also argued that the theater should primarily satisfy the audience. To do this, in everyday dramas, he draws relationships among friends and family, the clash of desire and duty, dreams and reality. And he tells about it not coldly and distantly, but warmly and with sympathy. Moreover, Tikamatsu sought to show the moral truth. Even love, unlike other playwrights, he described differently, bringing into it not only impulses of desire and passion.
